The Lion’s Den (Insight)
The Lion’s Den is a braggadocious poem with undertones of sadness. It was inspired greatly by Diablo by Mac Miller. I wanted to capture that same energy, clever wordplay and punchlines intertwined with a hint of sadness and melancholy delivery. Admittedly, I was not a fan of Miller while he was alive. I wrote him off as a corny white rapper and I did not care to listen to him. It wasn’t until his untimely passing, that I saw the mass grief the Hip-Hop community was suffering, which eventually made me look into his music, since it seemed so revered by so many. One of the first songs I heard was Diablo and I instantly loved it; I am a sucker for vocalized pain in the music I consume. It’s unfortunate it took his death for me to realize how talented he truly was. The Divine Feminine and Ballonerism are my favorite albums of his. Playing into “The Lion’s Den” theme was going to come sooner or later, after all my name is Daniel and I did grow up in a Christian household. My goal with this piece was to say: “Yeah, life sucks sometimes and I’ve been through shit, but despite that, I’m still a beast and I will prevail!” as ‘corny’ as that may be. I hope you enjoy reading The Lion’s Den by Daniel Peiffer.
