Whatever Keeps You Going

I see you,

Standing on that ledge,

Smiling but it’s just pretend

The world whizzes by,

It’s unrelenting and never tells you why

Overwhelmed and robbed of hope

You spill your guts, they tell you “cope”

They call you “selfish”, they call you “weak”

But they don’t call you, it’s been weeks

They don’t know that it’s been years

You’ve swallowed pride and buried fears

I know there’s war in you,

Tell me what you’re looking forward to,

Tell me who your favorite artist is,

Your favorite moments and accomplishments

You’re stronger than you should have needed

Every day you’re here, you’re undefeated

You’re not crazy, make no mistake

Too much pressure and people break

I’d hate to see you go when you’ve come this far

I’m proud that you’ve been trying so hard

I hope in time you find your worth

It’s clear to me, you belong on Earth

But your feelings are valid, let them be known

Even if they’re just whispers on your own

There are hotlines if you need a second opinion

Know there’s always someone willing to listen

Close your eyes, focus on your breath,

Let’s take a step from that ledge.

I won’t tell you you can’t come back

It’ll still be there for when you’re sad

The darkest place I’ve ever been,

Is on that ledge that you’re at my friend

I see you.
